Yearly Events

  • Fourth of July Parade - JARC assists the Parade Committee with communications.
  • Juneau Preparedness Expo, held every other year, JARC sets up a station at the event and gives a presentation on emergency communications; next Expo Fall 2017
  • Club meetings - First Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the NOAA Forecast Office on Mendenhall Loop Road. See home page for details on the next meeting
  • Ham lunch - Many Juneau hams congregate at noon every Wednesday in the deli area in the Safeway store in Mendenhall Valley; a great chance for an eyeball QSO, and an opportunity to call on the other hams' expertise on radios, antennas, electronics etc.
  • VE Exams are given periodically, see Classes and Examinations page
  • Annual Picnic - held on the Saturday of Field Day (third weekend in June)
  • Thank you Picnic - our thanks to NOAA for acting as such wonderful hosts - in conjunction with our August meeting, usually in the afternoon when shifts change at the Forecast Office
  • Various Contests and Operating Events - JARC attempts participation in ARRL DX, CQ WW, CQ WPX, IOTA, and ILLW, as well as FD
  • ARES Net - Tuesday evening, 1900 local, see repeaters page for frequencies. Net is called on the linked system if it's up, 146.52 simplex if not. Visitors welcome after ARES member check-ins
  • Jamboree On The Air - This is the annual operating event where we set up KL7JRC in the Nugget Mall and encourage Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to talk to other scouts over the radio.
  • Southeast Alaska Regional Science fair through our affiliation with the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair. Projects are from both Juneau high schools and 3 outlying communities

 

A little history information you might find interesting

Titanic was assigned the callsign MUC in January 1912. Sometime after January, Titanic's callsign was changed to MGY - this was previously assigned to the US vessel, Yale. 
As the dominant marine radio company of the time, Marconi allocated their own callsigns, most of which began with the letter M - these basically identified a Marconi installation, regardless of its location or the country of registration of the vessel in which it was installed.
Callsign allocation was eventually standardized at the London radio conference of 1912 (post-Titanic), with prefixes being allocated on an international basis. UK coast stations and ships thenceforth used the letters G or M as the first letter of their callsigns. US ships and stations used K, N, and W, German stations and ships used D, Italians I, French F, etc.
